Girl Power

Although last week was the last week of the Girl Power club, some of the club's members participated in a 5K run over the weekend. Throughout Girl Power, the girls learned about setting goals, even lofty ones, and how to achieve those goals. One of our goals was to complete a 5K. Although it was challenging, the girls were smiling and celebrating at the end of their run. Their hard work and perseverance paid off!

Crow - Canary Lacrosse

The Ninth Age girls just wrapped up their unit on lacrosse. The highlight of the unit was the Crow-Canary lacrosse game. The girls showed great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout all of the games.

Earth Week

Last week, 9B was fortunate to have some time to spend outside in honor of Earth Week. The girls had new teachers: students from a sixth grade science class.  These creative teachers taught lessons using games, songs, and even dances.

The Egg Drop!

To add a little excitement to composition class, the Ninth Age girls participated in an egg drop experiment. The girls created a box that protected an egg while being dropped from the balcony in the girls' gym. If an egg survived the drop, the egg was dropped, with a bit more force, a second time. Many creative materials were used to help protect the eggs. Some were a bit more successful than others! Regardless of the final outcome, the girls will have plenty to write about in composition!

Cookies

We have been learning all about measurement in math class recently. After the boys and girls learned about capacity in both the metric and customary systems, they were given the task to write a recipe for cookies. All of the correct measurements were given to the students; however, they were given using the metric system and they were not placed in the recipe. Once they decided where each measurement belonged in the recipe, they then had to convert the measurements to the customary system. They were pretty close with their measurements, but they did learn that baking the cookies for 15 minutes at 250 degrees was not quite enough!

The Number Pi

To continue our study of pi, students made paper chains. Each digit, 0-9, is represented by a different color in the chain. This helps to illustrate there is no pattern to the number. The math class was eager to show off their work!

Pi Day Fun

As part of the Pi Day celebrations, students in the Ninth Age had the opportunity to be picked to throw a pie at headmaster, Mr. Holmgren. In order to be eligible, they had to memorize at least the first twenty digits. The Ninth Age did not disappoint.  9B was well represented. In fact, one of the pie throwers is in 9B! A few of the pictures are a bit blurry; however, they capture the excitement!

Perimeter and Area

In math, we are just beginning to learn about perimeter and area. Before we got started, the class had a chance to play with the geoboards and create their own designs. Here are just a sampling. Later in class, there were some fantastic examples that helped reinforce the concept of perimeter.

Our Favorite Foods

One of the highlights of composition class for the Ninth Age girls is writing a descriptive paragraph about a favorite food. The girls wrote some fantastic compositions about a wide range of food. Although I would love to bring in each of the foods and do a small sampling, only one food from each homeroom was brought to school today. We had a delicious "entree" of margherita pizza follow by a "dessert" of cookie dough ice cream.  Although all of the girls wished their favorite had "won," we had great sports, and everyone enjoyed the special treat!

The Mile Run

In PE on Friday, the Ninth Age girls ran the mile run. Fortunately, the weather was warmer and sunnier than it has been in a while. The girls were anxious, but excited, all day in anticipation of the run. Even while running up the largest hill of the run, the girls were all smiles!

International Week

Last week Calvert celebrated International Week.  In addition to the activities and speakers already planned, 9B was lucky enough to have a few parents come in and share some additional information about Korea and Brazil. We learned about the importance of celebrating a baby's first birthday in the Korean culture and tried some new foods from Brazil.

The Play

The girls have been working incredibly hard to prepare for Wednesday's big performance. Here is a sneak peak from our dress rehearsal on Friday.

Indoor Recess

Between the snow, ice, rain, muddy fields, and freezing temperatures, the girls of 9B have had their fair share of indoor recesses.  Although being able to get some fresh air is always appreciated, the girls have been quite resourceful recently to make indoor recess as fun as possible.  There are always games of Uno, Apples to Apples Junior, and creative drawing and writing sessions happening in our room; however, a new house was recently constructed in the room.   It is complete with furniture, a family , and decorations.  It started out a simple design, but it is now a two-story house.  If this winter weather continues, there may a be a village in the room before spring finally arrives!
